Donkey Kong (1982)

One of my personal favorites. A game that actually has a lot to do with the original
arcade version. You play Mario, who is still a carpenter instead of a plumber
according to the instructions and you have to rescue a beautiful girl (the instructions
say nothing to indicate that she's Mario's girlfriend...) who has been captured
by Donkey Kong, which is the classic King Kong theme that lead to every Donkey
Kong & Mario game kids are still playing today. The bottom screen has Mario
dodging the rolling barrels that Donkey Kong throws at him from the top screen.
Mario can only jump over the barrels at certain points, where he is not obstructed
by the construction above him. At the top screen the crane can be activated by
pressing "left", Mario has to wait until the hook is in the right position
and jump, it is however possible to throw the crane switch and run straight away
to the right to grab the hook although this takes some practice. After a successful
jump, one of the four girder wires is removed and when all four are gone Donkey
Kong falls down, causing the girl to fall in love with him indicated by hearts
emerging from her. The overlay/underlays of the scenery are especially nice and
the gameplay is really good for an LCD. In game B iron bars appear at the second
floor in the bottom screen preventing Mario from jumping or climbing the ladder.
When a score of 300 is reached without a miss, a bonus is rewarded in the form
of double points until a miss occurs, the score blinks as long as you can score
double points, this makes it quite possible (and a real challenge) to reach the
top score of 999!
