Western Bar (1990)

Nice game. You star as the drunken sheriff and are fooling around in a local saloon. When the game starts you can see the sheriff liquoring up and, probably quite drunk, shooting twice into the air. The bar tender serves different drinks which he slides over the bar and throws to the left. For some reason the drunken sheriff feels like shooting the drinks. You can shoot one, two or three drinks in one time depending on how many are passing through the same line of fire, if you shoot three drinks at once, you'll get a bonus, also a bonus bottle will appear and when you shoot that one as well you get an extra bonus. The two customers sitting at the bar are not happy with this rude behavior of the sheriff and the guy on the left throws ashtrays at you while the lady to the right throws apples, these must be avoided.

After shooting 20 drinks, a showdown at the saloon is going down. A bandit can be heard approaching from outside and enters through the swinging doors. The sheriff takes position behind the table at the right which provides some cover, it can absorb three bullets from the bandit. The bandit at the left will hide at different places and will only shoot when he's right in front of you. This is the only time you can hit him, the only thing you have to do is press 'fire'. The sheriff will automatically stand in front of the table and shoot, at this time you're vulnerable to the bandits bullets too. The trick is to push 'fire' at the exact right time when the bandit stands in front of you. This takes split second timing and is actually quite faithful to the normal showdowns in westerns.

After hitting the bandit three times, you will go back to your hobby of shooting drinks, but this time the bandit occasionally throws sticks of dynamite into the saloon, you must make sure not to shoot it or you will explode. Sometimes the bartender, probably fed up with you, grabs the dynamite and throws it at you in the bottom right corner. You must walk over there and pour some whiskey over it to defuse it, this is done with the bottle which the sheriff is holding all the time.

The sound in this game is a strange breed: the sound for a gunshot is satisfyingly real and actually makes you feel you're watching a western, the rest of the game contains some unusually detailed melodies, but these and the rest of the sound effects are so vivid and loud that it is actually quite annoying, it can luckily be turned of.

Original game, fun to play.
